UW-Extension Pest Management Field Day for West Central Wisconsin

UW-Extension will host a pest management field day for corn, soybeans, and alfalfa on Thursday June 28 from 1:00 – 3:00 in west central Wisconsin. The field day will be held one half mile west of the Trempealeau and Jackson County line on the north side of highway 95.  Watch for Extension signs marking the field day.

“The challenging season we have faced so far has brought many concerns to farmers minds. Along with the sub-optimal economy for crop production, attention must be directed to treating only those insects and diseases in the crop that can be profitable to treat,” says Steve Okonek, Trempealeau County Agriculture Agent.  Damon Smith, Assistant Professor, Department of Plant Pathology, UW-Madison, will discuss diseases of corn and soybeans and the efficacy of fungicides.  Bryan Jensen, UW Madison, Department of Entomology, will cover insects and scouting techniques for corn, soybeans, and alfalfa. Steve Okonek, Trempealeau County Agriculture Agent will discuss cover crop impacts on crop pests and diseases.

Continuing education credits for the Certified Crop Advisor program have been granted. There is one credit for integrated pest management and one and a half for crop management.  There is no fee to attend the field day.  Plan to bring a lawn chair if needed.  Light refreshments will be provided. Please contact the Trempealeau County Extension office at 715-538-2311 ext. 208 to RSVP.
