On Farm Culturing to Improve Mastitis Treatment – A workshop for dairy farm employees, and owners…

Wednesday, February  24th ~ Alma Center, Lunch 12:30, program 1-3 p.m.

UW-Extension milk quality specialist Pam Ruegg will provide an informative workshop for dairy farm employees (and owners) featuring tips and recommendations for improved treatment of clinical mastitis on Wednesday, February 24th at the VFW Post in Alma Center ( 111 E. Main Street).  Dr. Ruegg, will discuss the science behind healthy udders and teats, and  how to recognize signs and symptoms before problems arise. While farms have made vast improvements with regard to somatic cell count and mastitis treatment, the disease remains the top expense with respect to dairy cattle treatment costs.  Dr. Ruegg will take us through a checklist of setting up an on-farm laboratory for successful culturing. On-farm culture systems do not need to be expensive or elaborate however a designated workspace is required, along with a couple of key components.   Information presented at this program will be available in English and Spanish. The program will begin at 12:30 with lunch, followed by discussion from 1-3 p.m. Contact the Jackson County UW-Extension for more information and to register (715) 284-4257.
